OUR 7th ANNUAL
Seersucker Day - June 18th, 2015
A great all-American staple of the Southern wardrobe, the seersucker suit screams hazy, hot, humid, traditional wear.
No less an esteemed personage than Atticus Finch braved the heat in the full three-piece version in “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
Seersucker is a cotton fabric, commonly striped
or checkered, used to make clothing for
summerwear, with a strong tradition in the the
Persian words "shir o shekar," meaning "milk
and sugar", from the resemblance of its smooth
and rough stripes to the smooth surface of
milk and bumpy texture of sugar.
In the mid-1990s, US Senator Trent Lott from
Mississippi designated a “nice and warm” day
in the second or third week of June as
Seersucker Thursday. This tradition has since
spread outside Congress and is now known as
National Seersucker Day.
